Travis Proctor serves as Associate Professor of Religion at Wittenberg University, specializing in ancient Mediterranean religions with a focus on early Christian cultures (50-500 CE). His work bridges historical scholarship and contemporary societal issues, particularly in environmental ethics, gender studies, and media literacy. He teaches courses including New Testament, Hebrew Bible, and innovative topics like "Fake News, Forgeries, & Frauds" using experiential learning methods such as field studies and historical reenactments.
Dr. Proctor earned his B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis and completed his graduate studies (M.A. and Ph.D.) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
His research employs interdisciplinary approaches from cultural studies and the environmental humanities. The recently published monograph Demonic Bodies and the Dark Ecologies of Early Christian Culture (Oxford University Press) investigates how early Christian conceptions of demonic entities influenced ancient environmental thought and offers historical perspectives for current ecological crises. Additional research interests encompass animal studies, ritual studies, and the material culture of religious spaces.
Dr. Proctor's scholarly articles appear in leading journals including the Journal of Early Christian Studies and Harvard Theological Review. He actively connects historical religious phenomena to modern contexts, such as analyzing ancient forgeries in relation to contemporary misinformation.
