Tracy L. Vargas, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNC Pembroke). She is also affiliated with the Maynor Honors College. Her research focuses on low-wage service work in U.S. dollar stores through a decade-long ethnographic project, exploring themes of precarious labor, poverty, and gender. Dr. Vargas teaches courses in sociological theory, poverty, technology's societal impacts, and gender studies. She has served on UNC Pembroke's Institutional Review Board (IRB) for three years and mentors student research projects.
Education: BA in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh (2008), MA in Sociology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2011), and Ph.D. in Sociology from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs (2018).
Professional Service: Holds roles including Vice-Chair of the Society for Social Problems (SSSP) Labor Studies Division, Editor for the UNC System Learning and Technology Journal, member of the New Scholars Research Grants Committee for the Labor Action Research Network (LARN), and Outreach Committee member for the Working-Class Studies Association (WCSA). In 2023, she became a certified Penn Resilience Program Trainer and now trains UNC Pembroke students in resilience methodologies.
