Dr. Tracey Horton serves as Professor of Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice at Thomas College, where she has administered the forensic psychology program since 2010 while teaching courses in psychology, criminal behavior, and criminal justice. Her career bridges 15 years of hands-on experience in North Carolina's criminal justice system, including offender evaluation in correctional institutions, felony investigations, sentencing recommendations, and capital murder mitigation work.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Human Services/Criminal Justice Specialization from Walden University
- MA in Clinical Psychology from Western Carolina University
- BS in Psychology from Appalachian State University
Dr. Horton's research confronts systemic inequities through rigorous examination of racial sentencing disparities—evidenced by her dissertation on North Carolina's Structured Sentencing Act—while investigating intersections of mental health disorders, substance abuse, and criminal behavior. Her work prioritizes real-world applications to improve justice system outcomes and address psychological factors driving criminal conduct.
She actively shapes academic life through current service on the Student Affairs Committee and previous roles on Library, Faculty Affairs, and Professional Development Committees. As Faculty Advisor for Alpha Chi Honor Society (2012-2023) and current member of the Restorative Practices Advisory Group, she mentors students while influencing juvenile justice policy through her prior appointment to Maine’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Group (2015-2022), where she distributed funding and advised state policymakers on system-level reforms.
