Toshiro Hara is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Michigan Medical School, where he leads research focused on understanding cell-cell interactions in brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma. His laboratory is physically located at the Biointerfaces Institute at the North Campus Research Complex and is affiliated with the BioInnovations in Brain Cancer (BIBC) program supported by the Biosciences Initiative.
Hara's research program centers on unraveling the complexity of tumor biology through cross-disciplinary approaches. His work investigates how cells interact and communicate within the tumor microenvironment and how these interactions determine cell identity, function, and malignant properties. Using cutting-edge technologies including single-cell RNA sequencing, humanized model systems, and genetic tools, his laboratory seeks to decipher cellular diversity and connections in brain tumors to develop precise therapies for intractable cancers.
Analysis of Hara's publication record reveals a consistent focus on tumor heterogeneity, cell-state plasticity, and immune-tumor interactions. His most recent work (2023-2025) emphasizes immunotherapeutic approaches for glioblastoma, particularly exploring how immune checkpoint blockade can activate microglia and T cells to mount effective anti-tumor responses. Earlier work (2019-2021) established foundational understanding of transcriptional programs driving glioblastoma heterogeneity and developed innovative mouse models for glioma research.
Hara has made significant contributions to understanding how cancer cells interact with immune cells, particularly demonstrating how macrophages induce mesenchymal-like states in glioblastoma cells and how these states correlate with immunotherapy response. His laboratory has also pioneered research on Mint3 protein's role in tumor metastasis and immune responses.
Through his work, Hara aims to translate basic discoveries about cellular communications into effective and precise therapies for intractable brain tumors. His laboratory philosophy emphasizes mentoring the next generation of scientists, as evidenced by his inclusion of high school student research in his lab's outreach activities.
