Torbjörn Bäck is an Associate Professor (Universitetslektor) in Experimental Nuclear Physics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Since January 2024, he serves as head of the research division Nuclear Science and Engineering within the Department of Physics at the School of Science. He holds significant educational leadership roles, including Deputy Head of Education at the School of Science (since 2022) and responsibility for Life Long Learning programs. Previously, he was Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Department of Physics (2012–2022) and instrumental in developing KTH's Nuclear Engineering Master's program (2006–2011).
Research Focus:
- Gamma spectroscopy for studying exotic nuclear phenomena
- Lifetime measurements of excited nuclear states
- Collaborative projects in micro/nano dosimetry with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM)
- Development of radon detectors for earthquake precursor research (artEmis project)
Teaching & Curriculum Development:
- Course examiner for SH2603 Radiation Protection, Dosimetry, and Detectors
- Responsible for Modern Physics (SH1014) and Research Methodology in Physics (SH2007)
- Oversees degree projects in Physics and Technology and Learning
Advisory Role: Currently supervising PhD students Linda Eliasson (micro/nano dosimetry) and Ebbe Cederlöf (experimental nuclear physics). Offers MSc/BSc diploma project opportunities in his research areas for Engineering Physics students.
