Tony Schmitz is the Richard Rosenberg Distinguished Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), with a joint faculty appointment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). He leads the Machine Tool Research Center (MTRC), focusing on machining dynamics, precision engineering, and smart manufacturing. His roles include Director of the Southeastern Advanced Machine Tools Network (SEAMTN) and President of the American Society for Precision Engineering (ASPE).
Education: BS (Temple University, 1993), MS & PhD (University of Florida, 1996/1999). Postdoctoral work at NIST (1999–2000). Previous appointments include UNC Charlotte (2011–2019) and the University of Florida (2002–2011). Research emphasizes machining stability, vibration analysis, and hybrid manufacturing, leveraging machine learning and physics-based models.
