Tony Makarome Yue is an Artist Faculty member in the Professional Integration division at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore (NUS). He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Berklee College of Music. As a bassist, conductor, and educator, he actively performs in jazz circles across Asia and America, collaborating with renowned musicians like Louis Bellson and Danilo Perez. His conducting highlights include the US premiere of Procaccini’s opera La Prima Notte and leadership roles with the Columbia Lyric Opera and NUS Wind Symphony.
Research interests focus on jazz performance, orchestral conducting techniques, and music composition. His works include the children’s opera Faybulous (2001) and commissioned compositions for institutions like NUS. He teaches jazz studies and popular culture at Singapore’s National Institute of Education and leads music theory courses.
Notable roles include Musical Director of the NUS Wind Symphony since 2003 and collaborations with Asian jazz icons such as Jeremy Monteiro and Michael Veerapan. His arrangements, such as William Grant Still’s The Black Man Dances, reflect expertise in orchestration and cultural fusion.
