Dr. Tony Cook is a Lecturer in the Department of Physics at Aberystwyth University. His research focuses on automated planetary cartography, GIS applications for planetary datasets, spacecraft imaging optimization, and 3D surface measurement techniques for planetary landers. He has contributed to projects such as the Lunar Net ESA mission proposal and the Virtual Planetary Space Weather Service. His work includes collaborations on lunar transient phenomena, solar coronal streamers, and citizen science initiatives like Moon Zoo. Cook has published extensively since 1996, with notable articles in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and Planetary and Space Science.
Research Interests:
- Automated digital planetary cartography (feature recognition, Mercury/Lunar DEMs)
- GIS integration with planetary datasets
- Optimizing spacecraft imaging for stereo/temporal coverage
- Close-range 3D measurement techniques for planetary landers
- Robotic telescope automation
- Imaging/tracking objects at sea
Grants/Projects: Lead Co-Investigator on the 2019–2022 Science and Technology Facilities Council-funded project Solar System Physics at Aberystwyth University, focusing on solar wind modeling and space weather services.
