Prof. Dr. Toni Tholen is a faculty member at the Institute for German Language and Literature at the University of Hildesheim, where he teaches and conducts research within Department 3: Linguistics and Information Sciences. He serves on multiple committees including the Department Council for Department 3 as a representative of the Professors' Group, the Scholarship Selection Committee, and the Doctoral Committee for Dr. phil. degrees as Deputy Group of Professors.
Tholen's research focuses on the complex relationship between facts and fiction in contemporary literature, with particular attention to time diagnostics and self-representation. His work examines how literary texts navigate the space between factual reality and fictional construction, especially in autofictional narratives and contemporary literary diagnostics. He has demonstrated particular interest in authors like Karl Ove Knausgård, exploring how contemporary writers diagnose both themselves and their times through literary expression.
As an active organizer in the academic community, Tholen co-organized the third binational workshop of the German-Spanish working group 'Fakten und Fiktionen' in Madrid in May 2022, focusing on 'Zeitdiagnosen zwischen Fakten und Fiktionen' (Time Diagnostics between Facts and Fiction). His presentation at this event, 'Die Welt und ich. Zeit- und Selbstdiagnostik bei Karl Ove Knausgård,' reflects his research interests in contemporary literary self-diagnosis.
Tholen also serves on the Board of the Center for Gender Studies at the University of Hildesheim, demonstrating his commitment to interdisciplinary research and institutional development.
