Tong Qiu is an Assistant Professor of Ecology at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment. He leads the Spatial Ecology and Environmental Data Science (SEEDS) lab, focusing on understanding how global change impacts terrestrial ecosystems. His research integrates remote sensing, ecological modeling, and field data to study forest regeneration, biodiversity responses, and phenology shifts under climate change. Qiu holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of North Carolina and has held academic positions at Duke and Penn State.
His research interests include climate change impacts on ecosystems, forest dynamics, and the application of remote sensing technologies. Recent work explores seed production dynamics, urbanization effects on vegetation, and the development of decision-support tools for conservation planning.
Qiu has secured over $1.3 million in grants as a lead PI, including NASA-funded projects on forest recruitment and socioecological outcomes of restoration. He teaches courses in remote sensing and environmental analysis and mentors graduate and undergraduate students in ecology and data science.
Awardees of his work include the High Impact Publication Award (2023) and multiple fellowships. His lab collaborates internationally, with ongoing projects in North America and China.
