Tone Smolej is a Professor at the Department of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. He has been a full professor since 2014 and served as department head from 2018 to 2024. His research focuses on Slovenian-French literary relations, imagology, thematology, and the history of comparative literature. He has led the ARRS-funded project History of Doctoral Dissertations of Slovenian Candidates in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (1872–1918) and received the Prometheus of Science award for science communication in 2021.

His recent publications explore topics in imagology, literary reception, and university history. Key research areas include naturalism, translation studies, and Slovenian literary identity formation through cross-cultural interactions.
