معرفی
Tom Wileman is a Professor and Research Leader at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia. His academic roles include Director of the Biomedical Research Centre and former Head of the Department of Immunology and Pathology at the Pirbright Laboratory. He holds a B.Pharm from London University (1976) and a Ph.D. from Liverpool Moore’s University (1980).
His research focuses on autophagy’s role in viral infections, Crohn’s disease, and gene delivery mechanisms. Key interests include viral protein interactions with autophagy pathways, autophagy’s impact on disease outcomes, and the link between autophagy gene mutations and Crohn’s disease susceptibility. He has pioneered studies on pathogens like foot-and-mouth disease virus and coronaviruses.
Wileman’s work bridges basic science and translational research, with projects funded by the BBSRC and international grants. His 25+ research projects include investigations into LC3-associated phagocytosis, gut microbiome health, and viral immune evasion strategies. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles, including landmark studies in Autophagy, Journal of Virology, and Science.
Awarded prestigious fellowships (e.g., Basil O’Connor Scholar, Claudia Adams Barr), he is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology and British Society for Cell Biology. His teaching emphasizes virus pathogenesis and antiviral therapies at the Norwich Medical School.
