Tom Werner is an Associate Professor in Linguistics within the Department of Philosophy at Carnegie Mellon University's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He serves as the faculty advisor for the Undergraduate Linguistics Program, contributing to academic guidance and program development.
His research focuses on the logical and theoretical foundations of linguistic fieldwork, particularly monolingual elicitation. This work spans phonology, syntax, semantics, and writing systems, while exploring intersections between language and cultural, social, and individual identity. He has applied these approaches to Turkic (Sakha), Germanic (Frisian), Japanese, and experimental frameworks like Lincos for interstellar communication.
