Tom Van Agtmael is a Professor of Matrix and Disease Biology at the University of Glasgow (since 2022), coordinating the undergraduate genetics program and overseeing internationalization within the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Functional Genomics of Lyon (IGFL) from June 16 to July 25, 2025, collaborating with Prof. Florence Ruggiero on extracellular matrix (ECM) research, particularly collagen XXI’s role in hypertension using zebrafish models.
Education:
- PhD in Molecular Genetics, University of Melbourne (2001)
- BSc in Biochemistry, University of Antwerp (1996)
His research focuses on the extracellular matrix’s role in vascular diseases, emphasizing collagens’ pathological mechanisms. Collaborations with Lyon aim to transfer zebrafish research expertise, develop therapeutic strategies targeting ECM abnormalities, and foster academic exchanges between Glasgow and Lyon.
Key Achievements:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) since 2014.
- Lead on high-impact studies linking collagen deficiencies to vascular pathologies, including hypertension and intracerebral hemorrhage.
His visit to Lyon strengthens ties between institutions, enabling shared tools, training programs, and joint research ventures in ECM biology and vascular health.
