Tom Stallard is a Professor of Planetary Astronomy at Northumbria University's Solar and Space Physics group within the College of Science and Engineering. He holds a PhD from University College London (2001) and has held roles including RCUK Academic Fellow at the University of Leicester, Associate Professor, and College of Science and Engineering Graduate Director of Postgraduate Research. His research focuses on giant planet upper atmospheres and ionospheres, exploring magnetosphere-atmosphere interactions using spacecraft and ground-based telescopes. He also contributes to mission development and PhD supervision improvement in Physics. Key interests include exoplanetary habitability and the Anthropocene's impact on Earth's development.
Research highlights include studies of Uranus and Neptune ionospheres using JWST, Juno plasma wave analysis, and temperature variations in Jupiter's atmosphere. Supervised student Katie Knowles investigated Jupiter's equatorial ionospheric magnetic traces. Stallard is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and UKCGE-recognized research supervisor.
