Professor Tom Slatter is a faculty member at the Wolfson School, Loughborough University, specializing in wear of materials and tribology. He holds a professorial chair in Materials Wear and has a background in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sheffield (MEng, 2004; PhD, 2010). Previously, he served at the University of Sheffield in roles including Deputy Director of Teaching in Mechanical Engineering and founded Sheffield Formula Racing, which won the Formula Student UK Championship in 2021.

Research Interests: His work focuses on tribology, wear mechanisms in automotive components, additive manufacturing, and sustainable machining. Key areas include surface treatments for wear resistance, lubricant behavior, and impact wear analysis. He has pioneered studies on materials like PEEK, ceramics, and titanium alloys.

Advising & Outreach: As Faculty Advisor for Sheffield Formula Racing, he mentored students in Formula Student competitions. His leadership roles included Y3/Y4 Tutor for General Engineering and membership in the University Senate. His research extends to industrial collaborations, particularly in automotive and aerospace sectors.
Labs & Teams: Active in Loughborough’s Wolfson School, his work integrates with advanced manufacturing and tribology facilities. He has collaborated on projects involving bio-lubricants, cryogenic treatments, and tool wear monitoring technologies.
