Tom M. Mitchell is the Founders University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, where he founded the world's first Machine Learning Department within the School of Computer Science. He is a leading authority in artificial intelligence research with decades of contributions spanning theoretical foundations and societal applications.
Mitchell's pioneering work bridges machine learning with cognitive neuroscience, notably developing computational models to predict fMRI brain activation patterns during language processing. His never-ending machine learning system has operated continuously for over eight years, autonomously learning from web content. Current research focuses on AI-driven job transformation and personalized education through the CMU-Squirrel AI Lab.
Mitchell's accolades include:
- AAAI Distinguished Service Award (2007)
- Fellow of AAAI and AAAS
- Membership in the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (2010)
- Membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2016)
He has led major initiatives including co-chairing the National Academies' 2017 study on AI's workforce impact and directing congressional testimonies on AI policy. Mitchell co-directs the CMU-Squirrel AI Lab for Personalized Education at Scale, developing AI systems to transform educational delivery through adaptive learning technologies.
