Dr. Tom Love is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Sciences at Swansea University, working within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. His academic office is located in the Engineering East Building at Bay Campus. Dr. Love is actively involved in research, teaching, and postgraduate supervision within the field of sports science with a particular focus on sports nutrition.
Dr. Love's research expertise centers on performance nutrition, nutritional strategies for team and endurance sports, post-exercise recovery mechanisms, and fluid and electrolyte balance in athletes. His work bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in sports settings, with particular relevance to basketball, rugby, and soccer performance. He has developed a strong research profile examining how nutritional interventions affect athletic performance and recovery.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward examining broader issues in sports participation, including youth sporting experiences, parental support in academy football systems, and barriers to women's rugby participation. This expansion shows his research evolving from purely physiological investigations to encompass more holistic approaches to sports performance and participation.
Dr. Love teaches several key modules including SR-251 (Developing Research Methods for Sports Science), SR-259 (Human Nutrition), and SR-333 (Sport, Diet and Disease), providing students with essential knowledge in research methodology, nutritional science, and the relationship between diet, health, and athletic performance.
He currently supervises PhD students working on important topics such as participation in women's rugby pathways and creating safe sporting environments for children in Wales, demonstrating his commitment to developing the next generation of sports scientists and addressing real-world challenges in sports participation.
