Tom Lloyd Lipscomb is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Bennett College, part of the Division of Professional Studies. He also serves as the Director of Distance Learning and specializes in audio and video production, mentoring students in live streaming campus events and producing BelleAir Radio, broadcast on SiriusXM’s HBCU Network.
His research and creative interests include Bennett College history, live streaming, social media and politics, early 1900s cinema, and classroom response technology. He emphasizes collaborative learning and views the JMS department as a family, fostering strong student relationships and supporting those who pursue excellence beyond the classroom.
His creative works span documentaries and feature films, with recurring themes of cultural identity, media representation, and American subcultures. These include explorations of Deaf families, competitive Scrabble, wrestling personas, and Southern nostalgia, reflecting a deep engagement with diverse social narratives through media.

Tom supervises students in media production and live broadcasts, integrating practical experience with academic learning. He is currently writing a feature-length screenplay on a little-known civil rights victory led by Bennett College students in the 1930s, underscoring his commitment to historical storytelling and student empowerment. He also owns TLP, a video production company founded after completing film school at UNCG in 2003.
His work bridges academic instruction, community engagement, and creative production, positioning him as a dynamic figure in media education at an HBCU.
