Tom Kemeny is a Professor at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, University of Toronto, and a Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics' International Inequalities Institute. His research focuses on cities, innovation, and inequality, particularly spatial disparities in prosperity, immigrant diversity impacts, and the historical links between disruptive innovation and economic outcomes. He has held academic positions at Queen Mary University of London, University of Southampton, LSE, and UNC-Chapel Hill, and advises organizations like the OECD and World Bank.
Education: PhD from UCLA. Awards include the 2019 Understanding Society Paper Prize for Brexit-related migration research and the 2016 Urban Land Institute Prize for work on local social networks. His current projects examine wealth inequality in the US/Canada and the productivity effects of diverse urban teams.
Research interests integrate urban economics, regional development, and globalization. Notable work includes analyzing spatial inequality trends, immigrant diversity benefits in workplaces, and the geography of technological change. He co-authored the book The Rise and Fall of Urban Economies (2015) and serves on editorial boards of Journal of Economic Geography and Progress in Economic Geography.
Teaching includes courses on statistics for global affairs and comparative public policy. Policy engagement focuses on equitable regional development strategies and the socioeconomic impacts of migration.
