Tom Jenkins is an Associate Professor at the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU), affiliated with the Human-Computer Interaction and Design Center and the IxD Lab. His research focuses on speculative design, sustainability, and interaction design, emphasizing civic engagement and critical design methodologies. He is actively involved in initiatives like the NORDICFAB project, exploring Nordic technological wellbeing imaginaries through fabulation approaches.
Key research interests include the application of dreams as design materials, IoT ethics, and material computing. Jenkins has published extensively on topics ranging from digital legacy systems to smartphone usage reconfiguration. His work bridges theoretical frameworks like agential realism with practical design interventions, often using participatory and ethnographic methods.
Recent publications highlight trends in design futuring, speculative fabulation, and tangible interaction. His projects emphasize collaborative methodologies, such as the RESET climate IT magazine and Anekdota legacy systems. Jenkins collaborates internationally, with a focus on Nordic regions and global sustainability challenges.
As part of the NORDICFAB project (2023-2024), he explores speculative futures in technology through interdisciplinary approaches. His advising and grant work center on fostering creative confidence in design education and developing ethical tech solutions.
Labs and teams include the IxD Lab, where he leads experimental design research. His work often intersects with public engagement, leveraging design as a tool for societal reflection and change.
