Tom Imbo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where he joined the faculty in 1992 after a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin and a Junior Fellowship at Harvard University. He currently serves as Director of the newly formed Laboratory for Quantum Theory at the Extremes, a collaborative think-tank for theoretical physicists, mathematicians, and philosophers exploring extreme physical phenomena (e.g., quantum scales, relativistic speeds, extreme temperatures/densities) and their conceptual intersections with formal logic and Chassidic thought.
- BS, Physics (1986), University of Illinois at Chicago
- PhD, Physics (1988), University of Texas at Austin
His research bridges quantum mechanics, relativity theory, mathematical physics, quantum field theory, and formal logic, with a focus on the topological and algebraic structures underlying physical systems. He has secured federal and private grants, taught over 25 courses at UIC, and emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with mathematicians and philosophers. His work on Alice strings, non-abelian vortices, and quantum logic highlights his interest in exotic symmetries and foundational quantum principles.
The 15 most recent publications span quantum foundations (e.g., non-commutative observables, logical algebras), topological defects (Alice strings, monopoles), mathematical structures (Kronecker products), and high-energy physics (leptoquarks, collider phenomena). These reflect his interdisciplinary focus, with keywords like quantum field theory, representation theory, and quantum information.
