Tom Haley is a Professor of Practice and Director of MANE Undergraduate Student Services at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Nuclear Engineering and related fields from RPI, with expertise in nuclear criticality safety, Monte Carlo methods, and mathematical modeling. His technical strengths include radiation transport analysis, spent fuel storage design, and software development for nuclear systems.
Education:
- Ph.D., Nuclear Science and Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2000)
- M.S., Applied Mathematics, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1992)
- M.S., Environmental and Energy Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1990)
- B.S., Nuclear Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1984)
Research Interests: Haley specializes in nuclear criticality safety analysis, deterministic and Monte Carlo simulations, and quality assurance methodologies. His work extends to thermal-mechanical analysis of nuclear fuel, spent fuel pool chemistry, and non-destructive diagnostics for neutron absorbers.
Recognition: Recipient of the Erwin R. Gaertner Prize (1984) and teaching awards for innovative course design in blended learning.
Professional Experience: Prior to RPI, Haley spent 16 years at Northeast Technology Corporation, leading projects in nuclear power analysis and criticality safety.
