Tom Astley is a Researcher at Northumbria University, currently working as a research associate on the See Me North project, collaborating with Experts by Experience to develop trauma-informed homelessness services. He holds a PhD from 2014, focusing on Cuban punk musicians and national identity. Previously, he taught at Newcastle University and worked as a secondary school teacher and community engagement officer in Sunderland. His research interests span ethnographic methods, Latin American/Caribbean music cultures, technologies of music dissemination, and the sociocultural impact of the cost of living crisis.
His work often explores music’s role in political opposition and identity formation, as seen in his book Outside the Revolution; Everything and articles on Cuban punk and hip-hop. He also engages in music performance through several bands. Tom’s interdisciplinary approach bridges cultural studies, geography, and musicology, reflecting his commitment to understanding marginalized communities and artistic expression.
