Todd Michael, PhD, is a Research Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, leading the Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory. He focuses on leveraging genomic and computational tools to understand plant adaptation and genome structure. His work includes sequencing complex plant genomes, such as Oropetium thomaeum and Spirodela polyrhiza, to uncover mechanisms enabling plants to thrive in harsh environments. As part of the Harnessing Plants Initiative, he develops 'Salk Ideal Plants' to sequester atmospheric carbon via enhanced root systems. Michael holds a BA from the University of Virginia and a PhD from Dartmouth College, with postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute under Joanne Chory.
His research interests span plant genomics, circadian clock regulation, and synthetic biology applications. Key innovations include pioneering the use of duckweed as a model system and discovering novel nitrogen acquisition strategies in carnivorous plants. Awards include the 2016 Volwiler Society Fellowship and recognition as a 'Tomorrow’s PI' in 2008.
Michael’s lab employs cutting-edge sequencing technologies and bioinformatics to advance plant science. Collaborations include the development of tools like OrthoBrowser for gene family analysis and contributions to projects like the cannabis pangenome study. His team also investigates microbial interactions in plants and marine organisms, contributing to broader ecological insights.
