Dr. Todd Klutz is a Senior Lecturer in Biblical Studies and Early Christian Literature at the University of Manchester's Department of Religions & Theology. His academic journey includes positions at the University of Sheffield and the University of St Andrews. He holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield (1995), focusing on biblical studies with an emphasis on methodological innovation.
Education: BSc (East Tennessee, 1980), ThM (Dallas Theological Seminary, 1986), MA (Wheaton College, 1989), PhD (Sheffield, 1995).
Research focuses on Gnosticism, Nag Hammadi writings, exorcism/demonology in early Judaism and Christianity, and category construction in religious studies. Methodological expertise includes applying linguistics (conceptual metaphor theory, discourse analysis) and social sciences to ancient texts. Current projects explore individualism in early Christian discourse and the portrayal of Judas Iscariot in the Fourth Gospel.
Teaching includes courses on New Testament Greek, ancient Mediterranean magic, and biblical ethics. Supervised 19 PhD students, many of whom have published monographs based on their theses. Active in academic committees and editorial roles, including serving on the editorial board of Gnosis: Journal of Gnostic Studies.
Notable contributions: Monograph The Exorcism Stories in Luke-Acts (2004), and recent works on Baruch pseudepigrapha and cognitive narratology in Nag Hammadi texts.
