Todd J. Schwedt

Todd J. Schwedt is a Professor of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, where he holds the roles of Consultant and Division Chair in the Division of Headache, Department of Neurology. He also serves as Chair of Neurology Research and Director of the Clinicians Engaged in Research Faculty Development Program. His research is centered at the Neuroimaging of Headache Disorders Laboratory, which focuses on advanced MRI techniques to study migraines, post-traumatic headaches, and concussions.

Dr. Schwedt earned his MD from the University of Missouri School of Medicine and a Master’s in Clinical Investigation from Washington University. He completed his neurology residency at Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a Headache Fellowship at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

His research interests include headache, migraine, concussion, neuroimaging, pain processing, functional and structural MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, and computational modeling of brain data. He employs quantitative sensory testing and functional MRI to investigate atypical pain processing in migraine and uses multivariate models to classify and predict outcomes in headache disorders. His work has significant implications for patient care by improving diagnostic accuracy and prognosis.

Dr. Schwedt’s recent publications reflect a strong focus on neuroimaging biomarkers, longitudinal analysis of brain changes, and the application of machine learning to differentiate headache disorders. His work spans topics such as post-traumatic headache, chronic migraine, mild traumatic brain injury, and electrophysiological changes from sub-concussive impacts.

Among his numerous honors are the Harold Wolff-John Graham Award, Outstanding Young Physician Award, and multiple NIH career development awards (K23, K12, K30). He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Neurological Association.

Dr. Schwedt is actively involved in mentoring, serving on doctoral committees at Arizona State University and thesis committees at the University of Arizona. He holds leadership roles in major professional organizations, including Secretary of the American Headache Society and President-elect. He also leads multiple federally and foundation-funded research projects on migraine prevention and post-traumatic headache.

He leads the Neuroimaging of Headache Disorders Laboratory at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, a collaborative research environment that integrates neuroimaging, computational modeling, and clinical neurology to advance the understanding and treatment of headache disorders.
