Todd Matthew Bandhauer is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University (CSU), affiliated with the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. He leads the Research, End Market, and Commercialization Hub CoLab, focusing on advanced thermal systems and energy technologies. His roles include Director of Research and former Associate Department Head for Graduate Studies. Bandhauer holds a Ph.D. (2011) from Georgia Tech and B.S./M.S. degrees (1999/2002) from Iowa State University.
His research spans thermal energy systems, coupled electrochemical-thermal phenomena, microscale phase change, and waste heat recovery. Notable projects include high-efficiency cooling systems, carbon capture integration, and energy storage technologies. Bandhauer has secured over $18 million in funding, leading initiatives like the DOE-funded turbo-compression cooling systems and synergistic heat-pumped thermal storage projects.
Awardees of his work include the 2024 George T. Abell Award and multiple fellowships. He has co-founded startups like AtmosZero and Impact Cooling LLC, advancing decarbonization and thermal management solutions. Bandhauer’s lab supports 12 graduate/undergraduate students, with publications in journals like Applied Energy and Energy Conversion and Management. His work bridges academia and industry, addressing challenges in energy efficiency, sustainability, and thermal engineering.
