Professor Toby Tyrrell is a Professor of Earth System Science at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Department of Ocean and Earth Science. His research focuses on marine biogeochemistry, paleoclimatology, and Earth system dynamics, with particular emphasis on ocean carbon cycles, climate interactions, and coccolithophore calcification. He leads projects on topics such as submarine volcanism's role in carbonate formation and the Labrador Sea's oxygen anomalies. Currently supervising four PhD students, he collaborates with institutions like the Nuffield Foundation and European Union. His work bridges observational data, modeling, and paleoclimate studies to understand long-term Earth habitability and oceanic processes.
- Research Groups: Marine Biogeochemistry, Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute
- Projects: 'Descent into the Icehouse', 'Ocean Acidification: Impacts on Sea Surface Biology', and 'Interactive Model of Coral Atoll Formation'
Recent publications address climate-driven ocean oxygen dynamics, carbonate system evolution, and coccolithophore physiology. His interdisciplinary approach integrates biogeochemical, geological, and ecological perspectives to address global environmental challenges.
