Toby Kiers is a Full Professor in Ecology & Evolution at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, renowned for her groundbreaking research on plant-fungal symbiosis and underground ecosystems. She was awarded the NWO Spinoza Prize (2023) as the youngest recipient ever, alongside the Ammodo KNAW Award, NWO VICI Grant, and recognition as one of TIME's 100 Emerging Leaders (2022). Her work bridges evolutionary biology with economics and physics, focusing on mycorrhizal networks and their role in carbon regulation and sustainable agriculture.
Kiers leads international collaborations, including a €20M Gravitational Scholarship project on plant microbiomes, and co-founded the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (2021). She integrates cutting-edge technologies like biophysical robotics to visualize fungal nutrient flows, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals for environmental conservation.
Recent Publications highlight her work on fungal biogeography, signaling mechanisms, and agricultural innovation. Awards reflect her global impact on microbial ecology and regenerative farming. She actively disseminates knowledge through TED talks and worldwide lectures.
