Toby Friend is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on metaphysics of science, metaphysics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of physics. He holds a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from University College London, alongside degrees from Birkbeck (MPhilStud), University College London (MA), and the University of Glasgow (BEng in Engineering).
His work addresses topics such as laws of nature, causation, structural equations, and ontic structural realism. Notable contributions include analyses of dispositions via structural equations and engagements with Madhyamaka philosophy's critiques of causation. He teaches courses on metaphysics, philosophy of science, and formal epistemology.
Friend's publications span journals like Ergo, Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, and Asian Journal of Philosophy. He actively contributes to debates on Humeanism, idealization laws, and the metaphysics of quantities.
