Professor Toby Breckon leads research in computer vision, robotic sensing, and machine learning across Durham University's Computer Science and Engineering departments. His work advances automotive perception systems, X-ray security screening, and autonomous surveillance, with patented real-time visual saliency techniques filed in 2013.
Breckon has received multiple awards including the Royal Photographic Society Selwyn Award (2011) and Durham's Excellence in Knowledge Transfer Award (2022). He serves as scientific advisor to UK government bodies including Department for Transport and previously Cabinet Office. Breckon holds a PhD in Computer Vision from University of Edinburgh and is a STEM Ambassador promoting AI awareness.
