Dr. Toby Boyson is an education-focused Senior Lecturer in electrical engineering at the School of Engineering and Information Technology (UNSW Canberra). He specializes in teaching analog circuits and practical engineering classes, with research interests spanning engineering education, cognitive load theory, practical lab skills development, and gender representation in engineering. He co-chaired the Young Women in Engineering (YoWIE) outreach program and manages UNSW Canberra's Protolab makerspace.
- Research Focus: Engineering education, cognitive-affective development, neurodivergent inclusivity, and technical innovation in optoelectronic instrumentation.
- Technical Contributions: Developed signal processing techniques for cavity ringdown spectroscopy, with applications in explosive detection, chemical sensing, and hypersonic flow characterization. Holds patents in spectroscopic instrumentation, water desalination, and plastic degradation.
- Awards: 2022 UNSW Students’ Choice Teaching Award; UNSW Innovation Awards (2012) and Australian Museum Eureka Prize (2015) finalists.
- Publications: 15 most recent works cover cavity ringdown spectroscopy, engineering education, plasma diagnostics, and control systems. Trends include interdisciplinary applications of optoelectronics, educational outreach, and inclusive pedagogy.
Patents: Signal processing methods for decay time analysis and cavity-enhanced spectroscopy, with commercialization in the USA.
