Tobias Höppner

Education

• PhD: Dissertation on "Emotion recognition: Detection of emotions as coded by FACS in video streams by employing motion detection as found in the visual pathway of the mammalian brain", supervised by Prof. Dr. Hamker.

Research Interests

Professor Höppner's work centers on Computational Neuroscience and biologically inspired vision models, specifically investigating neural mechanisms in the Retina and V1 cortical areas. His research bridges early vision processes with practical applications in emotion recognition systems, leveraging motion detection principles derived from mammalian visual pathways to analyze facial expressions and social cues.

Research Group Affiliation

He contributed to the Research Training Group "Connecting Virtual and Real Social Worlds" (April 2012 - November 2018), an interdisciplinary DFG-funded initiative examining media-mediated communication constraints. This collaboration between computer scientists and social scientists explored virtual-real environment integration across communication, emotion recognition, sensomotorics, and learning domains, resulting in projects like CrossWorlds with publications in outlets such as Scientific Reports.
