Tobias Baitsch is a Professor at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), Department of Architecture, Wood and Construction, where he serves as Director of the Institute for Settlement Architecture and Construction (ISAK) since January 2024. Previously, he was Head of the Department of Architecture at BFH from August 2022 to December 2023. His academic career includes positions as Research Associate at ETH Zurich and Lecturer at EPF Lausanne.
Dr. Baitsch holds a Doctor of Science (Dr. sc) degree from EPF Lausanne (2012-2018) and a Master of Science (MSc) from ETH Zurich (2001-2007).
His research focuses on Critical Urban Studies, with particular expertise in Postcolonial Urbanism, Informal Urbanism, Urban Policy, and Urban Poverty. His work emphasizes User-Driven Urbanization, Participatory Urban Development, and creating Inclusive Cities that address issues of informality in urban contexts. His publications reveal a strong focus on urban development in South Asia, particularly Mumbai, India, examining the politics of urban planning, land use regulations, and incremental housing production.
Dr. Baitsch is a member of SIA (Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects) and has extensive knowledge of urban contexts in both Switzerland and India.
As an educator, Dr. Baitsch teaches in the Bachelor and Master of Architecture programs at BFH, with courses including Planning 5 for 5th Semester BA students, 'What do buildings do?' as an options course for MA students, and 'WHO, HOW, HOUSE?' as part of the BFH-Diagonal program.
At ISAK, Dr. Baitsch leads research initiatives focused on settlement architecture and construction, with particular attention to informal urban development processes and inclusive urban planning approaches that bridge theoretical urban studies with practical applications.
