Timothy Ward serves as Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean of Research and Faculty Support at Millsaps College, where he directs the W.M. Keck Center for Instrumental and Biochemical Comparative Archaeology. His leadership fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across undergraduate research initiatives.
His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Texas Tech University (dissertation: Cyclodextrins and Micelles in Separations) and a B.S. in Chemistry with American Chemical Society Certification from the University of Florida.
Dr. Ward's research integrates analytical chemistry with archaeology, specializing in chemical analysis of archaeological artifacts through instrumental techniques like ICP-MS. His work emphasizes undergraduate skill development in an interdisciplinary environment, with recent focus on Mesoamerican pottery production. He teaches General Chemistry, Quantitative Analysis, Instrumental Analysis, and Principles of Chemical Separations, reflecting his commitment to experiential learning.
Dr. Ward's scholarly contributions demonstrate consistent innovation in archaeological chemistry applications, with his 2022 publication representing current methodological advancements in artifact analysis.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Nominated as a Fellow of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences (FMAS)
- Outstanding Contributions to Science, Mississippi Academy of Sciences
- Chemist of the Year, Mississippi Section of the American Chemical Society
- Distinguished Professor Award, Millsaps College
As Keck Center director, he mentors undergraduate researchers in developing technical competencies while advancing archaeological science. His administrative role as Associate Dean focuses on faculty development and research infrastructure enhancement.
The W.M. Keck Center functions as a multidisciplinary hub where students gain hands-on experience in biochemical comparative archaeology through cooperative research projects spanning chemistry and anthropology.
