Timothy Mutsvangwa is a Professor and Department Head of Animal and Poultry Science at the University of Saskatchewan, located in Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Guelph, a Master’s from the University of Aberdeen (UK), and a B.Sc. (Honours) from the University of Zimbabwe. His research focuses on improving nitrogen utilization in ruminants, particularly through understanding urea-nitrogen recycling mechanisms in the gut, molecular regulation of urea transporters and aquaporins, and optimizing feed supplements for dairy cows. He has experience as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Guelph and as a Principal Research Scientist in Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Agriculture.
His research employs isotopic techniques for whole-body urea-nitrogen kinetics analysis and ex vivo Ussing chamber studies. He investigates transitional metabolic changes in dairy cows during the periparturient period and evaluates protein-rich feedstuffs like canola meal and wheat-based dried distillers grains. This work bridges nutritional strategies with physiological and molecular insights to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.
Mutsvangwa teaches undergraduate courses in animal nutrition, dairy cattle management, and thesis supervision, as well as graduate courses on advanced metabolism and ruminant nutrition. Despite extensive contributions to research and education, no scientific awards or formal advisees are explicitly listed in the provided text. His research group’s findings aim to refine feeding practices for both dairy and beef production systems.
