Timothy Manning Swager is the John D. MacArthur Professor of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research focuses on synthetic, supramolecular, analytical, and materials chemistry, particularly in the development of functional assemblies such as electronic polymers, carbon nanotubes, and chemosensors. He leads the Swager Group, which explores molecular recognition, polymer properties, and applications in sensing and catalysis. His work spans liquid crystals, dynamic nuclear polarization, and nano-carbon functionalization. Swager has advised numerous doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom hold academic and industry positions globally. His lab is renowned for innovations in sensor technologies and materials science.
Research interests include synthesizing materials for gas sensing, electrochemical catalysis, and radiation detection. Notable contributions include ultra-sensitive chemosensors using conjugated polymers and advancements in carbon nanotube functionalization. His group also investigates liquid crystals for self-assembly and supramolecular structures. Collaborations, such as with Prof. Griffin on dynamic nuclear polarization, highlight interdisciplinary strengths.
