Dr. Timothy M. Palmer serves as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health at the University of Glasgow, with additional affiliation to MVLS College Services. His research is conducted within the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, where he has established himself as a leading investigator in molecular signaling pathways related to cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Palmer received his First Class BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester in 1987, followed by a PhD from the University of Glasgow's Molecular Pharmacology Group in 1991. He completed postdoctoral studies at Duke University Medical Centre in the Cardiology Division before joining the University of Glasgow faculty in 1997.
His research program focuses on the molecular architecture of novel signaling pathways in vascular endothelial cells, with particular emphasis on the JAK-STAT pathway and its role in cardiovascular disease development. Dr. Palmer's work explores how AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) regulates inflammatory signaling, how cyclic AMP and EPAC1 mediate anti-inflammatory effects, and how adenosine receptor signaling impacts vascular function. His research has significant implications for developing new treatments for cardiovascular diseases, obesity-related complications, and inflammatory conditions.
Analysis of Dr. Palmer's 15 most recent publications reveals a consistent focus on molecular mechanisms linking energy sensing, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease. His work demonstrates how AMPK activation suppresses inflammatory pathways, how JAK-STAT signaling contributes to vascular dysfunction, and how novel therapeutic targets like EPAC1 could be leveraged for cardiovascular protection.
