Timothy L. Lewis is a Professor in the Biology Department at the University of St. Thomas. With extensive teaching experience in biology, ecology, and environmental science, he has directed international study abroad programs in The Bahamas, the United Kingdom, and field courses in U.S. wilderness areas. His conservation work spans Kenya, China, and Japan, focusing on wildlife research and environmental stewardship.
- PhD in Wildlife Ecology from University of Wisconsin-Madison
- MSc in Wildlife Ecology from University of Wisconsin-Madison
- BA in Biology from Augustana College
Lewis's research bridges empirical fieldwork and applied animal biology, with two primary foci:
- Herpetology: Long-term studies on freshwater turtles including Apalone spinifera, Chelydra serpentina, and Glyptemys insculpta, examining population dynamics and behavioral ecology.
- Canine Biology: Interdisciplinary research on domestic dog physiology and behavior, culminating in his 2020 book The Biology of Dogs: From Gonads through Guts to Ganglia.
His scholarly output demonstrates sustained mentorship of undergraduate researchers, with collaborative publications appearing in Herpetological Review and Herpetologica. While not currently teaching in 2025 semesters, his academic contributions remain active.
