Timothy Kudinha

Dr Timothy Kudinha is a Lecturer in Microbiology at Charles Sturt University’s School of Dentistry and Medical Sciences, based in Orange, Australia. A Medical Microbiologist with over 20 years of international experience, he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and has held teaching and research appointments in Southern Africa, China and Australia.

Research Focus: Dr Kudinha’s work centres on the molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases, spanning epidemiology, laboratory diagnostics and antimicrobial drug resistance. His investigations deploy modern genomic tools to dissect virulence determinants, resistance mechanisms and transmission dynamics of key pathogens across clinical and environmental settings.

Recent outputs highlight whole-genome sequencing of Rouxiella soil isolates, genomic characterisation of Candida strains from otitis media, and large-scale analyses of uropathogenic E. coli clonal groups circulating in Australia. These studies collectively advance our understanding of emerging pathogens and inform evidence-based infection-control strategies.

Collaborations & Supervision: Dr Kudinha has forged productive partnerships with leading centres such as Peking Union Medical College Hospital, the University of Minnesota, University of Technology Sydney and Guangzhou Medical University. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students and contributes actively to the Microbiology Clinical Stream of NSW Health Pathology.

Laboratory & Teams: He is affiliated with the NSW Health Pathology diagnostic network and maintains active research groups at Charles Sturt University and through ongoing international collaborations.
