Timothy Hogue is an Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israelite History and Culture at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on integrating biblical texts with the broader cultural context of the ancient eastern Mediterranean and West Asia. He holds a Ph.D. from UCLA and previously served in the History and Anthropology Department at the University of Tsukuba (Japan).
His first monograph examines the Ten Commandments through the lens of ancient Levantine monumental inscriptions, arguing that these texts were framed as authoritative documents akin to royal decrees. Current research explores pilgrimage, place, and travel in ancient ideological frameworks.
In teaching, Hogue emphasizes contextualizing biblical narratives within their social and historical milieus, leveraging resources like the Penn Museum to engage students with material culture. He teaches courses such as Introduction to the Bible: The Old Testament and Visible Language: History of Writing Systems.
