Timothy Burke is a Professor of History at Swarthmore College, specializing in modern African history (particularly southern Africa), environmental history of Africa, social history of consumption, and popular culture, including video games, cartoons, and advertising. He is affiliated with the Aydelotte Foundation and contributes to interdisciplinary programs such as Film & Media Studies, Environmental Studies, and Black Studies.
His research explores the intersection of cultural, political, and economic histories, with a focus on how everyday practices like consumption and leisure reflect broader societal transformations. He is currently completing a book on individual experience and agency in 20th-century Zimbabwe and maintains the blog Easily Distracted, which discusses academia, politics, and geek culture.
Burke teaches courses on African history, environmental history, the social history of consumption, history of leisure and play, and the cultural history of the idea of the future. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary issues, often engaging with public discourse through media outlets like Vox, Inside Higher Ed, and the Christian Science Monitor.
