Timothy Bickmore is a Professor at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, Northeastern University, and holds an affiliation in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. He also serves as Associate Dean for Research at the Khoury College. His research focuses on developing relational agents—computer systems designed to build long-term social-emotional relationships with users. These agents are applied in healthcare, education, and eldercare contexts, emphasizing nonverbal communication and personalized interactions. Bickmore leads the Relational Agents Group, which studies health behavior change interventions and clinical trials for these systems.
Notable achievements include the NSF CAREER Award and recognition in Stanford University’s Annual Assessments of top 2% most-cited scientists (2022–2024). His work integrates AI, HCI, and healthcare to address challenges in eldercare autonomy, affective computing, and ethical system design. Courses taught include Principles of Information Science and Empirical Research Methods. He has organized AAAI symposia on topics like AI in Eldercare and Healthcare Communication.
