Timothy Bartholomaus is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Spatial Sciences at the University of Idaho, affiliated with the College of Science. His research focuses on glaciology, geophysics, and surface processes, particularly glacier dynamics, iceberg calving, and submarine melt mechanisms. He leads the Glacier Dynamics Group, which employs seismic and geophysical techniques to study ice-ocean interactions, subglacial hydrology, and sea level rise projections.
Education: Ph.D. in Geophysics (University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2013), M.S. in Geological Sciences (University of Colorado Boulder, 2007), B.A. in Earth Sciences (Dartmouth College, 2002).
Research interests include tidewater glacier behavior, calving processes, and the application of seismic data to understand glacier motion. Recent work emphasizes Greenland Ice Sheet dynamics and the development of applied ice sheet models to address climate change impacts. He has organized workshops such as FOGSS 2024 and contributed to interdisciplinary collaborations, including NASA-funded projects studying Greenland's outlet glaciers.
His publications analyze calving mechanisms, subglacial water systems, and ice-ocean interactions. He advises graduate students and mentors postdoctoral researchers in glaciology and geophysics. His group’s findings highlight the critical role of bed geometry and hydrological networks in glacier stability and sea level rise projections.
