Timothy B Gardner

Timothy B Gardner is a Professor of Medicine and Assistant Dean of Medical Student Research at Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine. He holds additional roles as Director of Pancreatic Disorders and Medical Director of the Pancreatic Islet Autotransplant Program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. His academic leadership includes serving as Associate Director of the Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship Program and Brigade Surgeon in the New Hampshire Army National Guard.

Dr. Gardner earned his BA in History from Dartmouth College (1995), MD from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine (2000), and MS in Clinical Research from The Dartmouth Institute (2013). He completed residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (2000–2004), followed by fellowships in Gastroenterology and Hepatology (2004–2007) and Pancreatology at Mayo Clinic (2008).

His research focuses on pancreatic disorders, including the pathophysiology, treatment, and outcomes of acute/chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. He has contributed to studies on total pancreatectomy, islet cell transplantation, and endoscopic techniques like ERCP. His work emphasizes evidence-based strategies to reduce post-procedural complications and optimize patient care.

Dr. Gardner’s publications span topics such as ERCP-associated pancreatitis prevention, pancreatic stent efficacy, and wound healing innovations. He is a key figure in large-scale clinical trials, including the SVI trial evaluating stent vs. indomethacin for ERCP safety. He collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and national study groups to advance gastrointestinal endoscopy and pancreatic disease management.

His educational leadership includes mentoring medical students in research through his deanship role. He actively contributes to academic discourse and serves on committees shaping clinical guidelines for acute pancreatitis management.
