Dr. Timothy A. Shahan is a Professor in the Brain & Cognition and Behavior Analysis Specializations at Utah State University's Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services. He directs the Shahan Lab, which investigates fundamental processes in conditioning and learning through quantitative theories like Behavioral Momentum Theory and Resurgence Models, with applications to drug abuse and developmental disabilities.
- Education: Ph.D. in Psychology (West Virginia University, 1998), Postdoctoral Fellow (University of Vermont), Research Assistant Professor (University of New Hampshire)
- Research Focus: Operant conditioning, behavioral momentum, resurgence, conditioned reinforcement, and translational applications using animal models.
- Scientific Contributions: Formal theories of resurgence, conditioned reinforcement as information signaling, and extinction bursts. Collaborative clinical work applies these findings to children with developmental disabilities.
- Funding: NIH (NIMH, NIAAA, NIDA, NICHD) support for over 20 years.
His recent publications explore time-scale invariant contingency, reward conflict processing, and punishment effects on cognitive flexibility. He has received prestigious awards including the B.F. Skinner Young Researcher Award and Distinguished Contribution to Basic Behavior Analysis Award.
- Scientific Awards:
- B.F. Skinner Young Researcher Award (2006)
- Distinguished Contribution to Basic Behavior Analysis Award (2023)
- Fellow, Association for Behavior Analysis International
