Timotheus Vermeulen is a Professor in Media, Culture and Society at the University of Oslo, Department of Media and Communication. In 2023/24, he was a visiting scholar in the History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University. He co-founded the webzine Notes on Metamodernism, co-edits the book series Studies in Metamodernism, and contributes regularly to frieze. His research focuses on cultural and aesthetic theory, film/TV analysis, and contemporary art, with global recognition across academic and popular media. He advises exhibitions like 'IKEA Hacking' and contributed to the Kroller-Muller Museum’s 75th-anniversary audio tour. His work explores metamodernism, postmodernism, and media aesthetics.
Research interests include metamodernist depthiness, genre pastiche, and the intersection of media with cultural theory. His articles analyze films like Blade Runner and TV series like Mad Men, emphasizing temporalities and cultural structures. Collaborations with scholars like Robin van den Akker and Kim Wilkins have shaped discussions on contemporary cultural logics.
