Prof. Timo Betz is a Professor at the Third Institute of Physics, University of Göttingen, leading a research group relocated from the ZMBE. His work focuses on the biophysical principles governing cell and tissue mechanics, integrating experimental and computational approaches. Key research areas include intracellular microrheology, collective cell migration, cancer cell invasion, and muscle stem cell mechanics. He develops advanced microscopy techniques and analysis tools, such as the BeadBuddy software for force measurements. Current projects explore active and passive material properties of cells, tissue organization during development, and 3D cancer migration dynamics.
His lab employs light sheet microscopy and optical tweezers to study systems like zebrafish embryos and HeLa spheroids. Instrumentation and software development are central to his work, with contributions to analyzing deformation fields and viscoelasticity. The research bridges fundamental physics and biological complexity, aiming to uncover the mechanical basis of cellular processes.
