Tim Rupert is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Director of the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI) at Johns Hopkins University's Whiting School of Engineering. His research focuses on nanocrystalline metals, defect engineering, and materials for extreme environments, aiming to enhance structural and energy technologies.
- Education: BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering (Johns Hopkins University, 2007), PhD in Materials Science & Engineering (MIT, 2007).
His work integrates computational and experimental methods to study grain boundaries, defect phases, and interfacial phenomena. Recent breakthroughs include scalable processing of bulk nanocrystalline alloys and defect-driven strengthening mechanisms. Rupert co-founded Foundation Alloy to commercialize novel metal alloys.
Awards: 2025 Brimacombe Medalist (TMS), ARPA-E CHADWICK Grant (2023).
